School ProgramsEco Books school programs give students an opportunity to learn about their school neighborhood through pleasant and stimulating discussions. We offer three programsA Natural History of the School NeighborhoodThis program gives an overview of the natural features of the neighborhood of the school, and the organisms that live in these spaces. The students discuss what is currently in their neighborhood and learn about the ecological history of the community. Attention is focused on the most salient natural features of the school neighborhood, both currently and historically. Water and Our LivesThis program gives an overview of the many ways in which our lives are dependent on water, where this water comes from and how it is cared for by people. The uses to which water is put and the sources and characteristics of the water we use are discussed. Attention is drawn to water issues in the neighborhood of the school. Soil and Our LivesThis program explains what soil is and how plants use it to grow. The students discuss the process of soil formation and learn how humans can assist this process through composting. We discuss the benefits of composting not only for the soil, but as a method of waste disposal and bioremediation. The composting process is demonstrated with indoor worm boxes and photographs of the organisms involved in the composting process. Attention is drawn to soil and waste issues in the neighborhood of the school.
